Joy-Ann “Joy” Reid's columns and articles have appeared in The Miami Herald, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, on Salon.com, Commondreams.org and in
The South Florida Times, where she covers local and national news and writes the occasional column. She also authors a popular political blog at
reidreport.com, and her reports and analysis on current events and politics can be heard on local TV stations like WTVJ-NBC Miami, on American Urban Radio Networks, and on Miami's Hot 105 FM.
Joy has appeared frequently on radio as a political commentator, including on Miami NPR affiliate WLRN, and most recently, as the co-host and producer of “Wake up South Florida with Andre and Joy” on NewsTalk 1080 AM WTPS (then owned by Radio One.) During her time with WTPS, she produced and was a member of the on-air cast of the morning drive talk show hosted by legendary South Florida radio personality “James T” Thomas and Tamara Gant, delivering a daily blog report that caught the attention of Radio One’s regional programming team. Joy quickly became a frequent guest commentator on Radio One‘s nationally syndicated programs including “The Warren Ballentime Show” and “Keeping it Real with Reverend Al Sharpton,” discussing national news stories originating from South Florida. She went on to produce and co-host the morning show for WTPS, from January 2007 until the station was sold in October.
As a producer, Joy was frequently cited for her ability to deliver national guests for the local morning show, including CNN’s Lou Dobbs, MSNBC‘s Joe Scarborough, comedian / social commentator Bill Cosby, former Reagan Undersecretary of Defense Lawrence Korb and ex-CIA analysts Ray McGovern and Larry Johnson; as well as for her solid journalistic contacts and sources within local, state and federal government and law enforcement.
As an on-air personality, Joy was known as the “voice of reason” on the morning show, often praised by listeners and guests for her in-depth knowledge of local and national issues, her thorough research, and her abiliy to deliver pertinent information with a sense of humor. In addition, the Brooklyn, New York native (by way of Denver, Colorado) has cultivated strong ties within the South Florida community, becoming a familiar face as a volunteer or emcee at local events.
Before fulfilling a long-standing dream of becoming a talk radio host, Joy worked as an online news editor for NBC News, producing webcasts for NBC affiliates in Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and New York before becoming senior editor of NBC Miami’s NBC6.net, via Internet Broadcasting Systems, Inc. , where she also ran online election coverage. She has also worked for local Fox station WSVN-TV as a news writer.
During the 2004 presidential campaign, Joy took a break from news to serve as statewide deputy communications director for America Coming Together (ACT), a 527 political organization that registered 50,000 Floridians to vote, with a particular focus on the African-American and Caribbean communities. During the campaign, Joy was tapped as regional liaison to Russell Simmons / Hip-Hop Summit Action Network’s "Hip-Hop Team Vote" voter registration tour, cosponsored by ACT.
In addition to political commentary, Joy is the managing partner of ImageLab LLC, a media consulting firm whose clients have included South Florida municipalities and non-profits such as the Urban League of Greater Miami. She is currently producing a documentary film series called “The American Cities Project,” which will recount the history of African descendants in South Florida.
Before getting into media, Joy worked in management consulting and as a freelance writer, plus a brief stint in advertising. She holds a bachelor's degree in film and visual arts from Harvard University and is a member of the South Florida Black Journalists Association, the NAACP of Miami Dade, the Rotary Club of Opa-Locka and the Harvard Club of Broward County.
